I am travelling back home from south west Portugal where I have been doing some bass fishing and photography and research etc. In one week I landed only two bass and I could not be more excited or buzzed up about it. I will start telling you about it all later in the week because I need to get packed up for the airport and to be perfectly honest I need a bit of time to process the whole thing. I don’t use the word intimidated lightly, but I can’t recall being intimidated by the actual locations and conditions and fishing since I was out with Matt from Fiiish and Nick from Top Water Lures on a boat around the little island of Ouessant off the north west coast of France……………

As much as there is the potential for really big bass all along the coasts of Portugal and northern Spain, the simple fact is that most UK bass anglers are not remotely used to fishing anywhere close to the potential conditions you could face out there. By no means am I some sort of rough weather specialist as such, but I can think of many bass anglers I know and come across who should never even entertain the thought of going bass fishing along those coastlines. We had fairly hectic conditions for most of the week, and although I reckon I am okay at dealing with large swells and big waves and massive walls of water, I need to have a serious think about how we approached it and what I would do differently when I return. I cannot tell you how much I respect what Grant Woodgate of Samson Lures does with his bass fishing out in south west Portugal, and I now understand so much more about the designs of many of his lures because of the conditions he is so often fishing. It’s bass fishing, but not as 99% of us know it. More to come.
