Damn I was so close to heading off to Costa Rica myself for this event, but when the grownups at Penn UK asked me to come along and take photographs, the dates for this rather nice fishing holiday clashed with some prior commitments. I tend to remain a tad wary of things like this, but because I really like the Penn Spinfisher VI spinning reels, and even if you don’t win you will still be sent a 300m spool of the criminally underrated Stealth Smooth 8 braid, it seems like a bit of a no-brainer to me if you are thinking about buying a Penn Spinfisher VI spinning reel within the next month - or 15th June to 15th July 2019 to be precise…………..
It kinda helps that these newish Spinfisher VI reels float my boat - I “previewed” them a while back here, and since then I have used them a lot more plus also added the smallest 2500 size as a test reel. The 2500 Penn Spinfisher VI is the same size as a Shimano 3000 if that helps, and it’s a sweet reel. In due course I will put some proper reviews up of these things, but my conclusion so far is that for around the £100+ mark they are about as good as I reckon a spinning reel can get. And yes, I seriously like how they offer a lot of protection against our lovely saltwater killing them stone dead if you go out surf fishing or get them splashed or drop one in the water and so on.
You might have noticed that I have a growing obsession with the Penn Slammer III spinning reels in the 3500 and 4500 sizes especially, and whilst these Spinfisher VI reels are not quite the Slammers, they are in fact a bit lighter (Slammer III 3500 loaded with line weighs 403g and the Spinfisher VI 3500 weighs 359g), you can actually get a smaller 2500 size whereas you can’t with the Slammer, it’s easy to get at the insides if needs be, and they just make so much sense to me with how so many of us go about our lure fishing. I would also imagine that some of the Spinfisher VI reels also make good reels for beach and boat fishing as well. If it helps and as with the Slammer, the Spinfisher VI in the 4500 size has the same body as the 3500, but with a bigger capacity spool (same size reel as a Shimano 4000).
So if you are thinking of buying a Spinfisher VI reel then make sure to enter this competition - buy a reel and then find all the details on the Penn UK website in due course. Five anglers have to win, and as I said, if you aren’t one of the lucky ones then enjoy that free 300m spool of Stealth Smooth 8 braid! I have fished a lot now with this version here if that helps.
