I wanted to check out some new ground the other day, so I went fishing but knowing at the same time that I have never caught an open-coast bass in the UK in March. I also wanted to re-familiarise myself with a lure rod I had fished with a fair bit but to be honest had sort of forgotten about until that Glasgow Angling Centre show the other day when on the Sunday morning I spotted the exact rod on sale for the most ridiculous price. I will put a review of this rod up on here soon because it’s a bloody good rod which is now accessible to a lot more anglers because of the offer price…………..

So off I went for a good look around, and because the water looked pretty good I did whack some lures around in the vague hope of a bass. Every single year I get frightfully overexcited if we get that first hint of spring warmth in March, and as I said the other day, the water seems to be a decent bit warmer than around this time last year. What’s the harm in getting out there for a bit of a go combined with checking out some new ground that’s been playing on my mind?
It was a glorious few hours and towards the end of looking around the sun came out and it actually felt pretty warm. The rod in question is the Savage Gear SGS6 9’6’’ 9-35g, a longer version of the outstanding SGS6 9’ 7-35g rod which I reviewed here and used a hell of a lot last year. I had nothing to do with these rods and I guess there was some sort of stock issue so Glasgow Angling Centre (Fishing Megastore online) snapped the 9’6’’ version up at a seriously reduced price.
I will put the review up soon, but because I hadn’t fished with the rod for a good while I wanted to get the rod back in my head before I try and get across to you what I think about it (it’s not in the same league the truly awesome APIA Foojin’RS Vivogue 96ML+ 9’6’’ 6-38g lure rod, but this SGS6 reminds me of the Vivogue so much, read my review of that APIA rod here). So along with walking around and chucking a few lures into some half-decent looking water I also went through my two lure boxes to remind myself of what the rod can and can’t do.
And because this SGS6 9’6’’ rod is rated 7-35g I clipped on one of my beloved Savage Gear Surf Seeker metal lures in the 35g white colour. As per the video clip here the rod is SO comfortable with a 35g metal when you give it a good thump, but I hadn’t quite realised how shallow the ground was and I went and snagged up a perfectly good lure! All in the name of testing I might add, but the bass fishing season hasn’t even started yet and I’m already a white Surf Seeker down………
