Heading over to Guernsey today to check out some of their winter bass fishing

Rather hoping my plane from Exeter takes off this morning and I don’t get a repeat of my not getting to Portugal fiasco, because if all goes to plan I will be in Guernsey in the Channel Islands by lunchtime. I have been lucky enough to have spent a lot of time in the Channel Islands over the years, but out of Jersey, Alderney, Herm, Sark and Guernsey, it’s actually Guernsey where I have spent the least amount of time. I can’t wait to get back out there and check out some of their winter bass fishing…………….

I don’t know if you are aware of this, but they get some of their best shore fishing for bass during the winter months, and I find this fascinating. I have known about it for a good while now, and I correspond with a few anglers out there about it all. Finally we have put a plan in place and I am going over for a few days to do a bit of fishing, take a bunch of photos, and see if I can nail a February bass. Can one claim a Feb bass from Guernsey?! Only about 70 miles from the south coast of the UK yet their bass fishery seems to be working on some rather different timings to what we know.

I am packed and ready to go. I am taking a £125 Savage Gear SGS5 9’ 12-46g four piece travel rod because I really like it, plus it fits in my hold bag together with waders, wading boots, lures, a couple of spinning reels and clothes etc. Hell, I am even taking my running shoes and if I have enough time I am even going to try and run a 5k or two when I am over there. As ever I will try and keep you posted with a few photos and so on. The weather forecast seems to be all over the place, but being an island surrounded by a serious amount of bass-type ground, I am rather excited about the next few days. I love getting to meet anglers I correspond with, and it’s only down to their kindness and generosity that I get to do stuff like this. You all have a good weekend, roll on the Six Nations. Can anybody get past the juggernaut that is Ireland?
